The scheme comprises the demolition of existing St Thomas’ House and Dunhill Fitness Centre and development of a 12 storey building (00+11) plus two storey basement with five storey link extension to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital to provide additional children’s medical services (Class C2), hard and soft landscaping, access and associated works.
Hospital Street provides a hardworking, functional and animated gateway to the Evelina London Expansion that meets the specific requirements of access, turning, parking and drop off bays. Vehicular movement is down-played through the used of shared surfaces and vibrant street planting, providing a generous public realm that prioritises the pedestrian experience.
Playful street furniture and colourful wayfinding elements give the space a distinct character while helping to direct the flow of people.
Improvements to Lambeth Palace Road include vibrant street planting that helps to buffer noise and pollution, with additional tree planting mitigating the loss of an existing tree.
It is very important that the landscape strategy creates an integrated public realm with effective pedestrian links between the existing and proposed buildings.
