The site is a vacant plot of land located on Wilmer Place, behind Stoke Newington High Street and adjacent to Abney Park. At the turn of the 20th century this part of Wilmer Place was occupied by Stamford House, a women’s refuge. The building was demolished in the 1980s; since then the site has been used as a car park.
The proposals provide flexible commercial space at ground and lower ground floor alongside 19 residential units. The design had to deal with the challenge of being in close proximity to significant heritage assets including the Listed Abney Park Cemetery.
The approach to the landscape design for Wilmer Place reflects a shared aspiration to create an inspiring landscape which responds to the site surroundings, access, location and connection to Abney Park.
In addition, the proposal creates opportunities for wildlife and visual delight and biodiverse planting, whilst at the same time accommodates the necessary servicing, access and turning, parking and permeable surface proposals.
The scheme won an overall Housing Design Award in 2019 that the team were very proud of.
